Description
The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), part of UK Research and Innovation, funds individuals and research groups pursuing adventurous, ambitious environmental research. The programme seeks curiosity-driven, high-reward projects that unlock new knowledge, with or without substantial risk. Pure, applied, technology-led and policy-driven research are welcome, provided they address—or provide the means to address—clearly defined environmental science questions and sit predominantly within NERC’s research areas.
The opportunity encourages multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research, including projects designed and delivered with other research funders and research users. Innovative use of artificial intelligence, engineering biology and quantum technologies is encouraged where it offers new ways to answer research questions. Responsible research practices should reduce harm or enhance benefits for society and the environment.
