The Ralph E. Roughton Paper Award honors exceptional unpublished manuscripts that make original contributions to the psychoanalytic understanding and/or treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, trans*, or gender-variant individuals. Established to deepen the field's knowledge of gender and sexual diversity, the award encourages scholarship that advances psychoanalytic perspectives and clinical practices related to LGBTQ+ communities. The winner receives a cash prize, is invited to present at the APsA National Meeting, and may submit their paper for publication consideration in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA).
