Description
The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) is a federal reimbursement program administered by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) through its Multimodal Planning and Programs Bureau, Active Transportation Programs. It supports eligible entities within New Mexico in developing and maintaining recreational trails and trail-related facilities, with a focus on quality, diverse projects that improve New Mexicans’ quality of life statewide.
The program covers both non-motorized and motorized recreation. Supported uses include hiking, bicycling, in-line skating, equestrian activities, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, off-road motorcycling, all-terrain vehicle riding, and off-road four-wheel driving. Funding supports both the creation and upkeep of trails and related facilities serving these activities.
