Description
The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) helps states develop and maintain recreational trails. Established by Congress in 1991, it is funded through a portion of federal motor fuel taxes paid on fuel used for non-highway recreation. The Federal Highway Administration provides the funding, which is passed through the Arizona Department of Transportation; Arizona State Parks & Trails administers the grants in Arizona.
RTP supports maintenance of existing trails, construction of new motorized and non-motorized trails, and facilities such as trailheads, restrooms, and parking. It also supports trail safety and environmental education. Proposed projects must be ready to begin work when Arizona State Parks & Trails issues an Approval to Proceed.
