Description
The McKnight Foundation funds Minnesota’s 11 Regional Arts Councils, established by the Minnesota Legislature in 1977 to encourage local art and cultural activity statewide. Since 2010, the councils have directed all McKnight funding toward individual artists and artist-centered activities. The regional network connects this support to local artistic practice, professional development, and cultural activity.
Council offerings include individual artist grants, career development support, fellowships, and emergency assistance. Northwest Minnesota’s individual artist program supports artistic businesses and technical skill development. Councils also administer grants supported by state appropriations and Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. These broader offerings have their own applicant rules and funding terms; the Northwest organizational and school programs below are distinct from its McKnight-supported individual artist grants.
