The Fund for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) provides Regular grants for full investigative proposals from freelance journalists, staff reporters and media outlets. The program supports high-quality, unbiased, nonpartisan reporting that has an impact by revealing previously unknown or hidden information. Investigations may result in print, online or broadcast stories, books, documentaries, podcasts or investigative photojournalism.
FIJ’s Board of Directors looks for projects that break new ground and expose wrongdoing by powerful people or institutions, including corruption, malfeasance and misuse of power in the public and private sectors. Proposals addressing topics already in the news should explain how the investigation would significantly advance the story or public understanding. FIJ encourages proposals written for ethnic media and submitted by journalists of color.
