The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) supports clinical and health services research rooted in osteopathic principles and practice. Research priorities are identified by the AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Research and Public Health and approved by the Board of Trustees. The program emphasizes empathetic, patient-centered care addressing body, mind, and spirit, alongside disease states and primary, secondary, and tertiary care.
Supported work includes osteopathic manipulative medicine and treatment (OMM/OMT), acute and chronic pain management, chronic disease, elderly care, cost-effectiveness, and quality of life. Studies may also examine whether osteopathic distinctiveness improves patient outcomes or investigate specific hypotheses about OMM’s effects on disease. Separate tracks support established researchers, new investigators, residents, and osteopathic medical students, with training tracks intended to encourage sustained contributions to osteopathic research.
