The European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) allocates around €1 million annually to research in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. Its Individual Research Grants help young investigators begin their research funding journey, while Study Group grants promote international collaboration. Supported approaches include laboratory investigations, clinical studies, experimental animal studies, or combinations of these.
Individual grants alternate between bacterial infections in even project-start years and fungal, viral and parasitic infections in odd years. Study Group Research Grants have no annual topic restriction. The larger Collaboration Grant emphasises innovation and networking. Additional Fördergesellschaft grants support antimicrobial resistance, emerging infectious diseases and vaccines, while the Women in Science category supports female or diverse early-career applicants. Translational proposals receive priority, although clinical application is not required for individual research.
