The Sociological Initiatives Foundation links research to social action. It funds U.S.-focused investigations of laws, policies, institutions, regulations, and practices that may limit equality, prioritizing work on racism, xenophobia, classism, gender bias, exploitation, and violations of human rights and freedoms. It also supports research on language learning and behavior where they intersect with social and policy questions, including literacy, bilingualism, and language in education, health, and law.

Projects should pursue institutional rather than individual change. The foundation seeks research that helps specific groups or communities expand opportunities and challenge injustices—for example, by informing policy, strengthening advocacy, shaping public sentiment, or addressing language and literacy challenges. Community-academic partnerships and research connected to an explicit social action strategy are central to its approach.
