Research in Pairs Scheme supports mathematicians through collaborative research visits, funding focused work with named partners to establish collaborations, formulate problems and advance joint research.
Funder: London Mathematical Society
Due Dates: January 22, 2027 (Application) | May 15, 2027 (Application) | September 15, 2027 (Application)
Funding Amounts: Up to £1,600 for visits abroad or from outside the UK; £800 within the UK; up to £200 additional caring costs
Summary: Supports research visits bringing mathematicians together with named collaborators to work on specific mathematical projects.
Key Information: PhD students are ineligible, and funded visits must provide at least four working days of joint research.
The London Mathematical Society’s Research in Pairs Scheme, part of Scheme 4, supports visits for focused collaborative mathematical research. It can fund a grant holder’s visit to another institution or a named mathematician’s visit to the grant holder’s home base. Visits may involve collaborators in the UK, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands or abroad. Funding contributes to travel, accommodation and subsistence for specific projects, rather than providing general support for a sabbatical.
The scheme enables mathematicians to establish new collaborations, formulate research problems or undertake intensive work with established research partners. Hosting a collaborator can also make joint research possible when caring responsibilities limit outward travel. Supported work must be mathematical, or the mathematical component of a wider project; mathematics education is excluded.
