Description
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety’s Office of Highway Safety and Justice Programs (OHSJP) administers RSAT subgrants to support substance use disorder treatment in state prisons and local correctional and detention facilities. Treatment may also address co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. The program aims to increase treatment access during confinement and maintain care as participants return to their communities.
Supported activities include prison-based residential treatment, jail-based pretrial treatment, and aftercare for participants leaving residential treatment. Community-based treatment, case management, and recovery supports are central to reentry planning. The Bureau of Justice Assistance encourages evidence-based treatment, including FDA-approved medications combined with counseling and behavioral therapies, to address alcohol and opioid use disorders and reduce overdose risks during confinement and reentry.
