Restore America’s Estuaries manages the Great Lakes Restoration Community Grant Program for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), the program supports environmental protection and restoration projects that directly benefit communities across the Great Lakes Basin. Its mission is to foster healthy, thriving communities while enhancing environmental health and restoring vital ecosystems.
The program pairs restoration funding with capacity building and technical assistance for community-based organizations. This support addresses challenges in applying for, obtaining, and overseeing federally funded projects, particularly for organizations representing communities most impacted by environmental degradation. The program seeks to deliver environmental, economic, health, and recreational benefits throughout a region whose waters provide transportation, power, recreation, and water to more than 30 million people in the United States and Canada.
