Description
The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets provides financial assistance for new or updated county agricultural and farmland protection plans through its Farmland Protection Planning Grants Program. The program supports local initiatives to maintain the economic viability of agriculture and its supporting land base, while protecting agriculture’s environmental and landscape preservation values.
County plans identify areas proposed for protection and the activities, programs, and strategies needed to keep land in agricultural use. Planning may also address agricultural sections of comprehensive plans, land use regulations, and zoning ordinances to establish policies supportive of local agriculture. Two eligible counties may apply together, with one designated as the lead county for contracting.
