Description
The European Space Agency’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) programme supports proof-of-concept studies and pilot projects developing sustainable space-based services and applications for road and traffic safety. The call responds to increased traffic pressures and changing mobility patterns, including micromobility and automated vehicles. Its goals are to improve traffic management, incident detection, predictive safety and critical data collection, reducing accidents, injuries and fatalities.
Developed with ESA BASS partners, the call covers vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure information exchange, safer road design, signage and maintenance, traffic-flow optimisation, protection of non-motorised road users and more efficient International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) surveys. Proactive vehicle safety, including weather nowcasting and road-surface analysis, is another example. These use cases are illustrative, not exhaustive. Solutions can use satellite Earth observation, navigation or communications to assess hazards, locate vehicles and exchange information, including in remote areas.
