The Robert H. and Clarice Smith Fellowship supports the advancement and completion of a doctoral dissertation or publication on northern European art from 1400 to 1700. Funded by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, it is offered through the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, the National Gallery of Art’s research institute.
The fellowship belongs to the Center’s broader program supporting graduate research in the history, theory, and criticism of the visual arts. One 12-month fellowship is awarded annually, with support for research and travel. Fellows may study in the United States or abroad, and unlike most of the Center’s predoctoral fellowships, this award does not require residence at the Center.
