Description
The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG), with support from the SEG Foundation (SEGF), organizes field trips to major mining districts worldwide and subsidizes student participation. Senior SEG members with recognized expertise lead the trips, with mine arrangements providing safe, comprehensive access and opportunities to interact with mine geology and mining personnel. The program seeks broad geographic representation, and participation is highly competitive.
Trips emphasize direct study of mineral deposits through surface outcrops, drill core, and mine visits. The Northwest United States itinerary featured porphyry copper-molybdenum, breccia-hosted gold, sediment-hosted base-metal deposits, and active hydrothermal systems. Alongside deposit geology, students explore exploration strategies, project databases, resource estimation, mining and processing methods, permitting, and remediation.
