The Radcliffe-Brown and Firth Trust Funds are jointly funded by the Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI) and the Association of Social Anthropologists (ASA). They support young scholars in social anthropology whose existing research is hindered by a lack of funds. The focus is on helping doctoral students in the final stages of writing-up meet thesis production and completion costs, rather than launching new projects.
The Trustees weigh financial need alongside research quality, with particular recognition for work likely to make an important contribution to social anthropology. In addition to Radcliffe-Brown grants, the Firth Centenary Fund provides a special Firth Award for a candidate considered to be of outstanding merit. The applicant guidance also identifies Sutasoma awards for exceptional research.
