The Royal Microscopical Society’s Public Engagement and Outreach Bursaries help members cover the small additional costs of running microscopy outreach events. The Society’s Council has set aside a dedicated fund for practical extras such as consumables and refreshments, rather than a separate research programme. Both virtual and in-person activities are supported, including new events and repeat activities.
Applications describe the event’s target audience, intended outcomes and the type of microscopy involved. The bursaries sit within the Society’s wider outreach work, which promotes microscopes in schools and raises public awareness and appreciation of microscopy and science through exhibitions, workshops and talks. Applications are considered by the Executive Honorary Secretary and Honorary Secretary Education.
