    Description

The Rural Transit Assistance Program (RTAP), administered by the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), supports non-urbanized transit activities in Montana. A component of the Section 5311 grant, it funds training, technical assistance, research, and related support services. Its emphasis is on activities designed and delivered primarily for rural transit providers, including eligible activities involving public transit operators in small urbanized areas.

MDT’s rural transit training work also informs the program’s training focus. In 2024, the department partnered with a consultant to complete a rural training needs study and develop an annual training work plan. That work was intended to strengthen rural transit training opportunities and better meet statewide transit training needs.
