    Description

The Russell & Sigurd Varian Award, administered by the American Vacuum Society (AVS), recognizes and encourages excellence in continuing graduate studies in sciences and technologies of interest to the society. Selection centers on excellence in research and academic record. The award is part of the AVS National Student Awards process, through which finalists present their research to the Awards Committee before the final recipients are selected.

Established in 1982, the award commemorates Russell and Sigurd Varian’s pioneering work in vacuum science and technology. It is supported by Agilent Technologies, which acquired Varian, Inc., in 2010. Recognition combines a cash award and certificate with reimbursed travel support to attend the AVS International Symposium.
