The Scottish Society for Northern Studies (SSNS) offers the Ryan Foster Memorial Grant annually to individuals who came to academia later in life or resumed study after a lengthy break, including because of protracted illness or caring responsibilities. Named in memory of Dr Ryan Foster, a scholar and Society committee member, the grant contributes to academic research and career development.
Supported activities include acquiring essential qualifications or skills, conducting fieldwork, organising academic events, and publishing scholarly research. Projects must demonstrate relevance to the Society’s aims and objectives: encouraging research on the interactions and influences of the Scandinavian, Celtic, and Scottish worlds. The Society’s interests include archaeology, history, place-name studies, literature, language, and manuscript studies across Scotland, the Northern and Western Isles, Scandinavia, and the wider North Atlantic.
