    Description

The Society of American Archivists Foundation’s Opportunity Grant supports unplanned archival projects that would otherwise be out of reach without timely external financial support. Applicants must explain the unexpected opportunity and demonstrate why it requires an urgent response. Unlike the Foundation’s Catalyst Grant, which supports planned, complex, longer-term projects, this program addresses opportunities whose costs were not anticipated in a repository’s budget.

Supported work may include evaluating a potential archival donation, traveling to survey a collection, or packing and shipping donated materials under a short deadline. Training to develop expertise needed to evaluate a potential acquisition containing born-digital materials is another example. These examples illustrate the program’s scope, rather than establish priorities among project types.
