Summary: Temporary relocation to Amsterdam enables researchers, writers, journalists and artists to continue work disrupted by conflict, war or restrictions on their freedom.

Key Information: Full-time residence requires attendance at NIAS at least four days weekly; this is not emergency relief or a route to long-term residence.

    Description

The Safe Haven Fellowship at NIAS-KNAW offers five months in Amsterdam to accomplished scholars, writers, journalists and artists unable to continue their work because of conflict or war. It supports people whose work is restricted or obstructed by state or non-state actors, including those facing severe infringements of academic freedom. Applicants outside academia are welcome, but must be researchers first and foremost.

Fellows pursue an original humanities or social sciences project within NIAS’s international, interdisciplinary community. The programme combines workspace, research facilities and peer exchange with temporary relocation support. The University of Amsterdam, Maastricht University and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences are official partners. Its purpose is to enable threatened work to continue, rather than provide emergency assistance or permanent relocation.
