Description
The Safe Streets to Transit program, administered by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Division of Local Aid & Economic Development, funds projects that improve pedestrian safety and accessibility for mass transit riders traveling to and from transit facilities. The program seeks to encourage walking as a mode of access to transit and supports infrastructure enhancements in the vicinity of transit hubs (rail stations, bus stops, ferry terminals), fostering safer, more inviting environments for pedestrians and improving overall circulation.
Eligible projects include intersection safety improvements, new or reconstructed sidewalks, curb ramps, pedestrian-oriented lighting, traffic calming measures, and pedestrian signals. Projects must be located within one mile of a transit facility, with priority given to those within a 0.5-mile radius.
