The Society for the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition (SAFN), a section of the American Anthropological Association (AAA), offers an annual Student Research Award to support the research phase of an original project. The award is intended for master’s and doctoral students with a concentration in food and nutritional anthropology whose work directly addresses food, nutrition, or closely related topics.
The program emphasizes meaningful engagement with anthropological theory and methods and a clear contribution to the field. Its stated priority is decolonized, ethical research focused on food justice and food sovereignty. Eligible approaches include predissertation research, secondary-source analysis, and archival work, but not literature-review-based research. All four anthropology subfields are encouraged to apply, as are interdisciplinary fields engaging anthropological methods and theory.
