Key Information: Active SAH membership is required to apply.
The Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship supports a graduate student in architectural history or a related field undertaking a 12-week Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) history project, usually during the summer following the award. Administered by the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH), the fellowship produces a written history of a significant U.S. building or site for the permanent HABS collection at the Library of Congress.
The fellow’s research interests and goals inform the selection of the building or site, and the fellow may be stationed anywhere in the United States. An SAH member appointed by the Society’s president provides project guidance. Established through an agreement between SAH and HABS in 1989, the fellowship honors Sally Kress Tompkins, whose advocacy of historical research shaped the HABS/Historic American Engineering Record program.
