The Sara Corrie Memorial Fund provides grants through the National Speleological Society (NSS) to support group cave exploration in the United States and its territories. The U.S. Exploration Committee administers the fund, reviewing and approving proposals for original exploration of caves and cave systems. Proposals describe the caves’ geologic and geographical setting, potential for discovery, and expected challenges.
The program helps groups obtain practical equipment and supplies needed for exploration, including rope, rigging, climbing, survey, and diving gear, alongside underground camping supplies, food, and travel. Research, photography, filming, touring, and sport-related caving qualify only when they support original exploration. Sharing discoveries is part of the program: recipients report findings for the NSS website and publish results in NSS News or present them at the annual NSS Convention’s U.S. Exploration Session.
