The NSF Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs provide federal R&D funding to startups and small businesses for the development and commercialization of deep technologies that have the potential for broad societal and commercial impact. These programs aim to transform high-risk scientific and engineering discoveries into market-ready products and services, strengthening U.S. competitiveness, security, and workforce development. Funding is available for Phase I (proof-of-concept), Phase II (development), Fast-Track (combined Phase I/II), and supplemental awards. The NSF does not take equity, and awardees retain full ownership of their company and intellectual property.
