SBIR/STTR Phase I Matching Funds Program supports North Carolina small businesses with matching funds for federally backed feasibility research to strengthen their competitiveness for Phase II funding.

Key Information: Tier 3 applicants generally must have received no more than two previous Match Awards; Helene-impacted-area applicants are exempt from this restriction.
Description
Part of the One North Carolina Small Business Program, this program provides state matching funds to North Carolina companies holding federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase I awards. The Office of Science, Technology & Innovation (OSTI) administers it on behalf of the North Carolina Board of Science, Technology & Innovation.
The program strengthens Phase I feasibility research, bridges the gap between the final federal Phase I payment and the first Phase II payment, and improves companies’ competitiveness for Phase II funding. Its broader goals include attracting more federal research dollars, fostering job creation and economic development, and encouraging the establishment and growth of advanced-technology firms throughout North Carolina. Qualifying federal Fast Track awards are also eligible.
