    Description

The Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists supports cardiothoracic and vascular research through three 2027 funding mechanisms: the In-Training Grant, Joyce Wahr Starter Grant, and Marianne & Michael Cahalan Endowed Research Award. The program supports investigations spanning disease mechanisms, cardiovascular monitoring, treatment, and clinical care.

Priority is given to Joyce Wahr proposals generating supportive or pilot data for a larger project or new research direction. Across the program, priority favors projects independent of other pending extramural support, or distinct portions of larger projects that develop the applicant’s independence from another investigator. Recent funded studies address vasoplegia after cardiac surgery, immune mechanisms in heart failure, goal-concordant care in adult ECMO centers, and trial efficiency for postoperative extubation.
