Description
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Solid Waste Section administers Scrap Tire Disposal Account grants for qualifying counties. The grants offset operating costs incurred in the proper management of county scrap tire disposal programs when those costs exceed proceeds from the scrap tire disposal tax.
Under the state’s Scrap Tire Disposal Act, each county is responsible for providing for the disposal of scrap tires within its boundaries. The tax is applied to new tire sales, and the North Carolina Department of Revenue distributes its proceeds to counties quarterly. Counties may seek account funding for an overage during either of two application periods each fiscal year.
