Description
The Section 5307 Urbanized Area Formula Program provides capital and operating assistance for public transit in urbanized areas with populations greater than 50,000. Federal funds are apportioned to urbanized areas using population, population density, and measures of transit service and ridership. The program also supports transportation-related planning.
Section 5307 funding may support activities formerly eligible under the Job Access and Reverse Commute Program, including services that help low-income individuals reach jobs. The apportionment formula accounts for the number of low-income individuals. In Michigan, the Department of Transportation’s Office of Passenger Transportation (OPT) manages the annual application process for requests for state match.
