Key Information: Only Regional Consortium principal investigators may apply, and Director approval is required before proposal submission.
The Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) provides seed funding for research on emerging issues and responses to emergencies in the Great Lakes region. The program expands the institute’s former rapid fund beyond emergency response to support emerging research directions and build a foundation for new research initiatives. CIGLR is a NOAA Cooperative Institute hosted at the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability.
Supported work includes developing genetic barcoding methods to identify larval fish, investigating how extreme flooding changes juvenile Lake Sturgeon habitat, and collecting Great Lakes water and sediment samples to address nano- and microplastic data gaps. The program emphasizes the urgency of the issue, the proposed response’s potential to address it, and prospects for securing additional funding to more fully address the problem.
