Description
The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets provides technical and financial assistance through the Seeding and Filter Strip (SFS) Program to establish long-term perennial vegetation on farmland. The program aims to keep eroded soil, sediment and nutrients from reaching surface water and ditches.
Supported practices include filter strips between cropland and waterways, grassed waterways that carry field runoff to stable outlets, and pasture or hayland plantings. Construction needed to make these practices effective—such as lined waterways, erosion control structures, re-grading and clean water diversions—may also be eligible. Vegetation established under the program can be harvested for hay.
