    Description

The Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR) awards Graduate Dissertation Research Grants annually to help graduate students defray the costs of work on U.S. foreign relations history. The program brings together the Stuart L. Bernath Dissertation Research Grant, W. Stull Holt Dissertation Fellowship, Lawrence Gelfand–Armin Rappaport–Walter LaFeber Dissertation Fellowship, and Samuel Flagg Bemis Dissertation Research Grants.

The awards support different aspects of dissertation work: Bernath funds expenses encountered in writing, while Holt and Gelfand–Rappaport–LaFeber support research travel. Bemis grants help cover domestic or international travel necessary for significant scholarly projects. Applicants must be actively working on a dissertation dealing with some aspect of U.S. foreign relations history.
