The Michael J. Hogan Foreign Language Fellowship is offered by the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR) to promote graduate-student research using foreign-language sources. Established in honor of Michael J. Hogan, long-time editor of Diplomatic History, the fellowship supports research on some aspect of U.S. foreign relations history.
The award helps defray the costs of studying languages needed for research or traveling to foreign-language archives. Online language learning programs are also eligible for support. Its focus is on language preparation and archival access that enable graduate students to work with the foreign-language materials needed for their historical research.
