The Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era (SHGAPE) Research Grant supports research on any topic concerning U.S. history between 1865 and the 1920s. Established in 2022 and awarded annually, it helps advanced doctoral students, independent scholars, and contingent faculty further research already in progress.
The program recognizes projects that contribute to scholarship on the Gilded Age and/or Progressive Era, broadly defined. Selection is based on the originality, historical significance, and feasibility of the research plan. Past supported work has explored railroad labor and cross-border mobility in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, U.S. empire building and the First World War, and Dakota diplomacy and belonging in the Canadian Northwest.
