Description
The Shirley Bill Award for Outstanding Teachers, managed by the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS), recognizes the labor of an individual teacher. The honoree’s name is thereafter listed in the society’s Annual Meeting Program. The award centers on teaching recognition rather than funding for a specified research project, with nominations accompanied by a contribution and a brief explanation of the teacher’s work.
The Shirley Bill Fund also supports the separate annual Innovative Course Design Competition, which encourages excellence in undergraduate teaching of the eighteenth century. That competition welcomes proposals from current ASECS members across the society’s constituent disciplines. Eligible proposals can describe a future or new course, a new unit, or a major revision of an existing course.
