The Newberry Library’s Short-Term Fellowships support intensive research using specific collection items essential to a scholar’s project. Fellows spend one to two months in Chicago investigating these materials and participating in the library’s scholarly community. The program primarily funds humanities-centered research drawing on archival and rare book holdings, but applicants may work in any field if they demonstrate a need for the Newberry’s collections.

Donors, organizational partners, and fellowship alumni support named funds covering broad research interests and particular subjects. These include literary and cultural criticism, medieval and early modern studies, historical editing, theater, rhetoric, translation, American history, cartography, and early American or Transatlantic history. Awardees are generally matched with applicable funds rather than applying separately to each named fellowship.
