    Description

The Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis (SABA) supports doctoral student research grounded in Sidney Bijou’s natural science framework for development. This framework treats observable interactions between an organism and environmental events as the primary data for studying behavioral development. Research should examine the emergence of and progressive changes within and across behavioral repertoires, including the roles of contextual, organismic, and historical variables.

The program prioritizes identifying behavioral processes involved in an individual’s cognitive, social, emotional, and language development. Relevant topics include derived relational responding, social referencing, bidirectional naming, interdependence of verbal operants, skill acquisition, joint attention, and behavioral cusps. Basic or translational research with nonhumans is appropriate when its primary purpose is to address behavioral mechanisms of development. The ABAI Science Board administers the grant process, and the SABA Board of Directors selects recipients.
