    Description

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) plans to support the establishment of Silvio O. Conte Centers for Basic Neuroscience or Translational Mental Health Research. These centers are intended to advance the state of science in brain and behavior research, uncover mechanisms foundational to mental disorders, and support the integration and translation of basic and clinical neuroscience focused on severe mental illnesses. The program also aims to enhance understanding of neurobehavioral developmental mechanisms and trajectories of psychopathology beginning in childhood and adolescence.

Research teams are encouraged to employ integrative, novel, and creative experimental approaches, working at multiple levels of analysis to address high-risk, high-impact questions. The initiative seeks projects that demonstrate extraordinary synergy, integration, and the potential to significantly advance the mental health research field.
