Funder: Simons Foundation
Due Dates: November 12, 2026, noon Eastern (LOI) | February 9, 2027, noon Eastern (Invited full application)
Funding Amounts: Up to $320,000 annually per institution for five years ($1,600,000 total), including indirect costs
Summary: Institutional funding supports junior HBCU faculty through teaching buyouts for basic science and mathematics research and student mentoring.
Key Information: HBCUs apply on behalf of nominated fellows; individual faculty cannot apply directly.
Funded by Simons Foundation International and administered by the Simons Foundation’s Science, Society and Culture division, this fellowship creates protected research time for junior tenure-track HBCU faculty. Teaching buyouts support independent research, publications, federal grant proposals and undergraduate and graduate student mentoring. The program seeks to strengthen long-term research productivity, collaboration and pathways into graduate STEM programs.
Eligible fields are mathematics, neuroscience, physics, and ecology and evolutionary biology. Priority goes to ambitious computational, data-driven and theoretical basic science and mathematics. Ecology and evolutionary biology proposals should connect ecological and evolutionary timescales or link these areas with other STEM fields. Primarily experimental or observational programs are less competitive; such work supplementing a primary computational or theoretical program may be considered exceptionally.
