    Description

The Association of Field Ornithologists (AFO) offers Skutch Research Grants to advance knowledge of the natural history, ecology, and conservation of birds living under natural conditions in Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Supported by a bequest from Dr. Alexander Skutch, the program replaced the Bergstrom Grant opportunity for Latin American researchers following AFO’s 2024 restructuring.

Projects must be question-driven and designed to provide new information. Primarily or exclusively observational research is welcome, reflecting Skutch’s emphasis on studying undisturbed birds in their natural environments. Supported work has addressed nesting and reproduction, migration, foraging, vocal recognition, and responses to environmental change, including threats from pesticides, microplastics, habitat loss, and climate change.
