Description
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) administers the Small Urban Program using federal Surface Transportation Block Grant funding. It supports road and transit capital projects in designated Michigan census urban areas with populations of 5,000 to 50,000. Projects must be consistent with regional land use and development plans.
Each area’s small urban committee reviews and prioritizes projects through a public planning process. The program directs funding toward that area’s highest-priority transportation needs. MDOT works with regional planning agencies and the committees to select and program projects; each of Michigan’s 65 small urban areas receives an allocation every other year, on an odd- or even-year cycle.
