Description
The Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship (SARF), launched in 2007, offers accomplished visual artists from the United States and abroad a one-month research residency at the Smithsonian. Fellows work with museums, research sites, collections, and scholars to explore connections between art, science, history, and culture. The program supports artist research rather than the creation or exhibition of artwork; studio space is not provided.
SARF brings artists and Smithsonian scholars together to discover new perspectives on collections and resources, inspire creative directions, strengthen the Smithsonian’s arts community, and broaden public understanding of contemporary art. A committee of Smithsonian curators of art, culture, and design selects fellows. The Office of Academic Appointments and Internships (OAAI) administers invitations, appointments, and funding.
