The Society for Classical Studies (SCS) recognizes outstanding K–12 teachers of Latin, Greek, or Classics through awards administered by the Joint Committee on the Classics in American Education. The program accepts both self-nominations and nominations from people familiar with a teacher’s work. It is a teaching recognition award rather than funding for a proposed research project.
The award emphasizes demonstrable teaching practices and results, including improved student learning, creative classroom activities, inclusive teaching, program growth, and community outreach. It also recognizes teachers who foster interest in classical languages and Greek or Roman culture, support students’ continued study, and contribute through professional service and development. Winners receive a cash prize and support to attend a professional meeting, while their schools receive funds for educational resources.
