Funding Amounts: $1,000 for travel to the SEM Annual Meeting
Summary: Supports African American and African Caribbean ABD doctoral candidates and untenured faculty attending the SEM Annual Meeting.
Key Information: Previous winners must wait three years before reapplying; preference goes to applicants presenting at the meeting.
The Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM) offers this annual travel award to increase participation by ethnomusicologists from underrepresented groups at its Annual Meeting. It supports African American and African Caribbean doctoral candidates who are all but dissertation (ABD) and untenured faculty at cultural institutions. The award funds travel to the meeting rather than a separate research project, with preference given to applicants delivering a presentation.
Applicants explain how attending the meeting will advance their professional goals and research agenda. A committee appointed by the SEM President evaluates completed applications and selects an awardee. Recipients are also encouraged to participate in the Robinson Network, helping sustain the Robinson legacy through shared governance, fundraising, and mentoring when appropriate.
