Description
The Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM) offers this annual award to support Annual Meeting attendance by students from groups that have experienced discrimination. It funds meeting travel rather than a separate research project, helping students engage with the field of ethnomusicology. Preference is given to graduate students and applicants delivering a presentation at the meeting. Financial need and the potential to make a significant contribution to ethnomusicology are central selection criteria.
Recipients may also choose to be paired with a senior ethnomusicologist as a mentor during the Annual Meeting, with additional support for a mentoring lunch. The award committee reviews applications, selects recipients, and chooses mentors for those who take part in the optional mentoring opportunity.
