    Description

The Society for Family Planning supports research on the clinical pharmacology of hormonal contraceptives, including pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, in people with higher body weight. This population has often been excluded from contraceptive clinical trials, leaving important evidence gaps. Supported by an anonymous foundation, the opportunity seeks empirical research with a clear path to influencing clinical practice, health services delivery, and structures supporting evidence-informed, person-centered contraceptive care.

Research interests include differences in metabolism and clearance across oral contraceptive formulations, interactions between oral or injectable GLP-1 receptor agonists and hormonal contraception, and how progestin-only pills function among people with higher body weight. The Society encourages measures beyond BMI and attention to social location, weight-related stigma, equity, and researchers’ identities and lived experiences.
