The Society for Marine Mammalogy (SMM) Conservation Fund supports research and education initiatives intended to catalyze real conservation action for the world’s most endangered marine mammals. Established in 2017, the fund offers a biennial grant opportunity focused on species, subspecies, or populations classified as Threatened on the IUCN Red List. Projects must demonstrate clear potential for tangible conservation outcomes.
The program emphasizes the conservation significance of proposed work, appropriate research and analytical methods, achievable objectives, and the applicant’s ability to conduct the project. The SMM Conservation Committee and Committee of Scientific Advisors lead competitive review, with final approval by the Board of Governors. Projects conducted outside an applicant’s home country must include community outreach and training.
